Sudanese Military Says It Thwarted RSF Assault

(MENAFN) The Sudanese military announced Wednesday it had thwarted an offensive by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.

According to the army, troops from the 6th Infantry Division, supported by allied units, “inflicted heavy losses in personnel and equipment” on RSF fighters during the confrontation.

At the same time, medical sources reported a deadly artillery strike by the RSF on Abu Shouk camp, which shelters internally displaced civilians in El-Fasher.

In a statement, the camp's emergency room confirmed the area came under “intense shelling today by RSF forces using heavy artillery.” The bombardment, the statement continued, left eight civilians dead, injured several others, and caused significant destruction to homes within the camp.

As of now, the RSF has not responded publicly to the incident.

El-Fasher remains a critical lifeline for humanitarian aid across Darfur. However, it has endured more than a year of intense siege and frequent clashes under RSF control. Despite multiple international attempts to secure a humanitarian ceasefire and open aid corridors, no breakthrough has been achieved.

The conflict between Sudan’s military and the RSF, ongoing since April 2023, has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and displaced approximately 14 million people, according to the UN and local officials. However, research from American universities suggests the actual death toll may be significantly higher, approaching 130,000.
